Message Follow Up | Making Sense of Sin: Part 2 – I’m Just a “Mistaker”

By Matt Dawson

I’ve never felt more defeated in my life!

I remember the feeling as if darkness was completely overtaking me and the rage of all that is wrong in my world was being unleashed. I had allowed thought after thought to pervade my mind and DECIDED that I just wasn’t going to take it anymore. I unleashed my anger, rage, and frustration and was left with nothing but shame, guilt, and a defeated heart.

To those we tell this story to, it’s usually filled with laughter at the site, sounds, and hilarity of the story. In short, my car inexplicably broke down for the 84th time, so I beat the engine with a cast iron weight from the trunk of my car and then preceded to lock my wife out of the car while I beat the steering wheel mercilessly, and cursed it to the point of exhaustion. Anger had won the battle. (To get the full story – my wife retells is in her book “Crowning Wisdom” – go buy it, Chapter 1 alone is worth the read!)

Love is easily one of the most interesting ideas in the world.

I mean, its probably one of the few intangible things that ALL people crave, desire, and even need in order live. Receiving love can change your mood, your attitude, even the way that you view your life. People will do all kinds of things for it, even things they normally wouldn’t think to be possible.

Love is one of the greatest mediums of communication too. When you love someone, sometimes you don’t even need words to let the other person know what you’re thinking or how you’re feeling. Love helps us to feel connected and valued by other people in this world.

Love can even become a commodity for which we trade and sell to get the things we want. Not just romantic love, but love that communicates worth or value to those we want to impress or get something from.

If you watch How I Met Your Mother, then you know that Barney has a lot of #1 rules.  However, his ultimate #1 rule is this:

New is always better.

That seems to be the way that a lot of people view the Bible as well.  Yes, the words of Jesus and everything that happened after he changed the world do seem to carry a lot of weight, but what about everything before?

Everyone knows that context matters.  Without context, stories don’t make sense, people can be hurt, and even fights can break out.

Message Follow Up | It Is: Part 1 – It Is Coming

By David McNeely

Don’t you love guarantees?

Whether it’s a service or product, I love to hear about a guaranteed outcome.  A guarantee implies I get what I want, doesn’t it?

Actually no.  Not every guarantee means I get what I want.  Sometimes the guarantee is only for certain parts to function in a way that is promised.  This is true for many things, like appliances or tech equipment like phones and computers etc.

Nowhere in life do we want a guarantee more than in relationships. While preparing for part 1 of It Is: It Is Coming, I was struck with how much I desire guarantee from God that redemption is coming for those I love, especially my kids.

In this episode, we gathered some of our staff together to discuss their thoughts on the relationship between grace & truth.  Most people have strong opinions one way or the other on this issue, but as you’ll hear in the conversation, this isn’t such a clear cut issue.

Weekend Preview | Fracture: Part 2 – Personal Choices

Your choices matter.

That truth is taught to us in most of our lives.  Even from a very young age, parents will teach their kids that their choices can dictate the quality and direction of their lives.

  • You touch a hot stove, you’ll get burned.

  • Get good grades, you’ll be rewarded.

  • Be kind to others, you’re often treated kind in return.

Understanding the power of our personal choices isn’t so much about learning how to get what you want as it is about knowing how your actions dictate the quality and direction of your life.  However, we don’t always make the best choices.

Message Follow Up | Fracture: Part 1 – Fractured Stories

Fracture – Finding Hope in the Pain: Part 1 – Fractured Stories from Journey Church on Vimeo.

By Matt Dawson

In the many stories that fill our lives, everyone experiences pain.  Everyone goes through moments when a FRACTURE happens and it’s painful at a soul-level.

A Fracture is a soul-depth crack or break in our story, caused by our individual decisions or compounded by our external circumstances.

Every Fracture has a Purpose… an opportunity for DESPAIR or HOPE.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

John‬ ‭10‬:‭10‬ NIV

Jesus comes to bring us Life to the Full.  The Enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy us.  To know this, doesn’t lessen the pain or make that fracture go away any faster.

We understand that in every fracture, there is either a purpose to take us out and flatline our story or an opportunity for God to bring HOPE to that pain.

By Chris Denning

Hope is one thing that every person on Earth wants.  I doubt there is anyone who’s ever lived who didn’t desire hope.

Hope for love.

Hope for their family.

Hope for their career.

Hope for the world.

Hope for their life.

Hope is something or someone to have confidence in/on.  Hope is a solution to trust in.  Hope is a source that sustains us.

Simply put, what we place our hope in will define our lives.
