Message Follow Up | Solid Rock / Sinking Sand: Part 4 – Love

By Matt Dawson

Yesterday we finished our series on FAITH. A four week discussion on what/who we are building our faith on and the unique foundation of Forgiveness and Love that represents our Faith in Jesus Christ.

I read a passage yesterday about understanding Love from 1 John 4. Simply, that we love God because He first loved us and HIS love is what is expressed through us.

My wife has mentioned to me that I sometimes openly mock the phrase “Love Wins” because I reject everything that people try to use it for.

I would like to take a moment to clarify WHY I don’t like nor associate myself with #LoveWins.

Love is easily one of the most interesting ideas in the world.

I mean, its probably one of the few intangible things that ALL people crave, desire, and even need in order live. Receiving love can change your mood, your attitude, even the way that you view your life. People will do all kinds of things for it, even things they normally wouldn’t think to be possible.

Love is one of the greatest mediums of communication too. When you love someone, sometimes you don’t even need words to let the other person know what you’re thinking or how you’re feeling. Love helps us to feel connected and valued by other people in this world.

Love can even become a commodity for which we trade and sell to get the things we want. Not just romantic love, but love that communicates worth or value to those we want to impress or get something from.

Message Follow Up | Solid Rock / Sinking Sand: Part 3 – Forgiveness

By Matt Dawson

I’ve not written or spoken about the Ashley Madison fiasco for the past 2 weeks for good reason.

  1. I hate when tragic news is over-publicized with an agenda.

  2. I knew this week was coming up, and that it was a good time to discuss it.

Yesterday, we talked about the FOUNDATION of our Christian faith: Forgiveness. Not just run-of-the-mill forgiveness that we can muster up, I’m talking about LAVISH, EXTRAVAGANT, FULL OF MERCY AND GRACE FORGIVENESS!

The Ashley Madison hack simply put a spotlight on a cultural norm in our area. Folks that have studied the social and spiritual needs of our Lake Norman community have come to realize that Adultery is one of the top issues we face.

When it comes to relationships, any kind of relationship really, the most difficult part has got to be forgiveness.

And not the kind of forgiveness where you say, “oh, it’s ok,” so you can move on to something else, but like real forgiveness. A forgiveness that really takes something for someone to extend.

In most relationships, this is the kind of forgiveness that we can find. Its shallow and useful at times, but it doesn’t really communicate what we wish we could. Its more like a fresh coat of white paint over a stained wall. It makes things look alright, but is simply a temporary measure.

I’m not trying to say that real forgiveness should be an easy thing to dole out, but that we are called as followers of Jesus to make forgiveness a regular part of how we relate with people. Why? Because God has already forgiven us of SO much more.

Message Follow Up | Solid Rock / Sinking Sand: Part 2 – Righteousness

By Matt Dawson

I’ve never been a fan of the term “Blind Faith.”

It’s usually used in a derogatory manner to project the foolishness of people who believe in a God they can’t see just because some old book tells them to. I understand why they think this way – and if that were all it was – they would be right.

Yesterday in our service, I challenged everyone to “exercise their faith” as a way of helping us know that we are “building our house on the rock” that is Jesus Christ. I gave many examples of ACTIONS and BEHAVIORS we can take to keep us humbly relying on Christ alone in every area of our lives.

However, there is a part of exercising our faith that comes in believing when there is really no evidence to point to that we should believe.

I’m really not a big fan of “churchy” language, especially when there is another way of saying it.

Congregation feels a little funny, when I could say church family. Proselytize doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue when I could say evangelize, or even share my faith.

However, there are some words that sound “churchy,” but are just the exact word you need to use. We’re focusing on that word this weekend in Part 2 of Solid Rock / Sinking Sand: Righteousness.

Message Follow Up | Solid Rock / Sinking Sand: Part 1 – Faith

By David McNeely

Periodically I will hear this question, “Do you know how ridiculous it sounds?” They are referring to THE reason behind why Christians believe what we believe. We believe many things. We believe some crazy sounding things.

We believe that God is, that God created, that man fell, that God sent, that Jesus finished, and that we must believe. And we believe all of this because the Bible says it is true. Can I filter that through the lens of someone who does not believe?

(DISCLAIMER – this is not indicative of everyone who is not a follower of Jesus. I do not wish to put words into other’s mouths. Lord knows I hate it when people do that to me, but this is a decent representation of a perspective I often hear.)
