Message Follow Up | Fracture: Part 1 – Fractured Stories

Fracture – Finding Hope in the Pain: Part 1 – Fractured Stories from Journey Church on Vimeo.

By Matt Dawson

In the many stories that fill our lives, everyone experiences pain.  Everyone goes through moments when a FRACTURE happens and it’s painful at a soul-level.

A Fracture is a soul-depth crack or break in our story, caused by our individual decisions or compounded by our external circumstances.

Every Fracture has a Purpose… an opportunity for DESPAIR or HOPE.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

John‬ ‭10‬:‭10‬ NIV

Jesus comes to bring us Life to the Full.  The Enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy us.  To know this, doesn’t lessen the pain or make that fracture go away any faster.

We understand that in every fracture, there is either a purpose to take us out and flatline our story or an opportunity for God to bring HOPE to that pain.

Message Follow Up | We Can’t Stay Here: Part 3 – We Have to Go

We Can’t Stay Here: Part 3 – We Have to Go from Journey Church on Vimeo.

Ready . . . Get Set . . . Go – NO

Go . . . Get Set . . . Ready – YES

What an amazing weekend we had together as a church looking at what God wants to do among us.  It takes steps of faith, going when He calls us to GO, praying for discernment along the way, and getting ready for God to do what only He can do.

However, this is not just a way to try and force God to act on our behalf.  We have to be clear about what GOD is calling us to do.  We can jump off a cliff with all the faith in the world that God will make a way for us, but IF HE DIDN’T CALL US TO JUMP OFF THE CLIFF, then we are facing a hard lesson when we hit bottom.

So, how can we be sure of what God is calling us to do?

Message Follow Up | We Can’t Stay Here: Part 2 – We Have to Change

We Can’t Stay Here: Part 2 – We Have to Change from Journey Church on Vimeo.

By Matt Dawson

Growing always brings CHANGE.

The Church of Jesus Christ is a LIVING THING.  It’s either growing and changing or it is stagnant (you can call stagnant things something else… DEAD).  Jesus was as clear as could be: GO and make disciples of EVERYONE!

Matthew 28:19

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

Churches that experience success have a natural instinct to protect that success and resist change.   They become risk adverse because they have much to lose.  Meanwhile, church plants, missionaries, para-church organizations, with less to lose are willing to risk everything to innovate, take risks, and even fail in pursuit of the BEST POSSIBLE FUTURE.

If you were not able to attend our service last Sunday, you missed one of the greatest weekends I’ve had the chance to experience.

There really is NOTHING LIKE celebrating what God has done and is doing together with your church family!  I hope you felt the same way – trust me, you’re going to want to take a few minutes and WATCH IT!

I ended our time together with these words:

Your pastor is ready… your leadership at this church is ready… we are going after all that God has in store for us – we will risk everything and never give up as long as there are people who need the absolute Hope of Jesus!  Are you ready?!”

It’s a powerful thing to stand with my brothers and sisters in Christ – our PARTNERS in mission and ministry – and boldly ask God to ignite passion in our hearts and launch us into His vision for our church.

I’m honored to be your pastor and cannot be more excited about this moment in the life of our church!

Message Follow Up | Hope: Part 3 – Hope Will Be . . .

Hope | Part 1: Hope Will Be . . . from Journey Church on Vimeo.

“May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.”

Psalm 33:22

This is one of my “go to” verses.  I love it because it highlights the unfailing love of God AND our choice to place our Hope in Him.

As Christians, we should be marked by the choices we make, especially our choices about where we place our Hope (our confidence, trust, source).  When people ask us “how can you have hope in such a hopelessly broken world” or “how can you retain hope when that broken world brings trouble right to your doorstep?”

The answer is simple, but not easy – we choose to. Continue reading

Message Follow Up | Hope: Part 2 – Hope Is. . .

Hope. I Part 2 – Hope is… from Journey Church on Vimeo.

Hope Is . . . in MY Jesus.

Believe it or not – the word “my” above is not a positive one of personalization and appreciation.  When I say that my Hope is in MY Jesus, I’m referring to the Jesus I want him to be for me.  The one that I craft in my head; the one that looks more like a genie in a Bible than the Creator of the Universe.

We all have a tendency to write a new gospel in our hearts called “the gospel of Steve, or the gospel of Sarah”.  This is OUR ACCOUNT of who and what we think of Jesus, His mission on earth, and what we feel & think He should be doing for us in our lives.  At the end of the day – OUR HOPE IS IN (MY VERSION OF) JESUS.

Message Follow Up | Grattitude: Part 2 – Show It

Grattitude: Part 2 – Show It from Journey Church on Vimeo.

An Attitude of Gratitude will drive WHAT I DO because I’ll know WHY I DO IT.

Colossians 3:17 (NIV)

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

This statement and verse combo are very convicting to me.  Probably because I spend more time doing things out an attitude of entitlement without realizing WHY I’m doing them.  This seems to be harder to address than just trying to filter my words and express gratitude.

Here’s why… The core of entitlement is selfishness.

It’s all about me.  When this attitude lives out in my life, I am consumed with making every decision and seeing every circumstance through the lens of me–colored glasses.  No matter what is happening, I am filtering all of it through me–colored glasses and allowing it to store up entitlement in my heart. Message Follow Up | Grattitude: Part 1 – Say It

Grattitude: Part 1 – Say It from Journey Church on Vimeo.

What I Say Matters…

It Reveals the Attitude of my Heart

Luke 17:11-19

As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria. As he entered a village there, ten lepers stood at a distance, crying out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”

He looked at them and said, “Go show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed of their leprosy.

One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!” He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritan.

Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” And Jesus said to the man,“Stand up and go. Your faith has healed you.”

This weekend, we talked about having an attitude of Gratitude.  This is constantly at war with the entitlement of our hearts.  The entitlement that says “this is NOT FAIR”,  “I want it NOW”, and “I deserve MORE”.

Message Follow Up | Breathing Room: Part 3 – Margin for Finances

Breathing Room: Part 3 – Margin for Finances from Journey Church on Vimeo.
(Click link if you cannot view video.)

“Life is Better with Room to Breathe.”

Over the past 3 weeks we’ve been in this discussion about the margin (or lack of margin) in our schedules, relationships, and finances.  After all of this talk – have you discovered what the answer is?  Have you asked yourself “Where do I need some breathing room?”

John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

I can’t help but bring up this verse in light of the past few weeks. This verse comes with a warning and a promise.  A warning that we are experiencing far to often and a promise that not many of us are experiencing enough of.
